Bearing accessories

Since seals and bearing housings are in separate sections within the SKF Interactive Engineering Catalogue, the accessories covered in this section include the sleeves and lock nuts used to locate and lock bearings in position on a shaft.

Adapter sleevesAdapter sleeves are the most commonly used components for locating bearings with a tapered bore onto a cylindrical seat as they can be used on smooth or stepped shafts (fig 1). They are easy to mount and require no additional location on the shaft.

When adapter sleeves are used on smooth shafts, the bearing can be located at any position on the shaft. When used on stepped shafts, together with an abutment ring, bearings can be accurately positioned axially and bearing dismounting is also facilitated.

Basic designSKF adapter sleeves are supplied complete with lock nut and locking device (fig 2). Smaller sizes use a lock nut with a locking washer (a), larger sizes use a nut with locking clip (b). The sleeves are slotted and have an external taper of 1:12. Up to size 40, the sleeves are phosphated. Larger sizes are untreated and protected by a solventless rust inhibitor.

  • metric adapter sleeves, series designations H and OH
  • metric adapter sleeves for shafts with inch dimensions, series designations HA, HE and HS
  • adapter sleeves with inch dimensions, series designations SNW and SNP

Designs for oil injection

Metric adapter sleeves To enable the oil injection method to ease mounting and dismounting, metric SKF adapter sleeves having a bore diameter of 140 mm up to 200 mm can be supplied to special order already prepared for oil injection (fig 3). This feature is standard for metric sleeves having a bore diameter of 200 mm and above. These adapter sleeves have an oil duct at the threaded side and an oil distributor groove on the outside surface. If oil is injected through this duct and groove, an oil film is formed between the mating surfaces of the bearing and sleeve and the force required to mount the bearing is reduced considerably. Details of the thread for attaching the oil supply lead to the duct as well as the appropriate hydraulic nuts can be found in the product tables.

In addition to these standard sleeves which are designated OH .. H and shown in the product tables, SKF produces sleeves to three other designs which differ in the number and arrangement of the oil ducts and distributor grooves, as described below.

  • OH design (fig 4)
  • The oil supply duct is at the side opposite to the threaded section and there is a distributor groove in the outside surface.

  • OH .. B design (fig 5)
  • The oil supply duct (or ducts) is at the side opposite to the threaded section and there are distributor grooves in the bore as well as the outside surface. Sleeves up to and including size 40 have one supply duct, larger sleeves have two.

  • OH .. HB design (fig 6)

These sleeves have an oil supply duct (or ducts) at the threaded side of the sleeve and distributor grooves in the bore as well as the outside surface. Sleeves up to and including size 40 have one supply duct, larger sleeves have two.
